Enjoy An Added Benefit With Numismatic Coins. Everyone enjoys collecting something... Why not collect something with long term value?
What Are Numismatic Coins And Why Should You Care? Numismatic Coin is a type of coin that typically has a higher value than the face value on the coin, due to several external factors concerning the coin. Coins that are considered rare or considered ancient will often have a significantly higher monetary value than the suggested value. Numismatic coins are highly coveted by coin collectors because of their history, grading and potential value. Historically, numismatic coins have risen more in value than bullion.
Basically, the reason why so many collectors love numismatic coins is their upside potential value. What makes numismatic coins so unique is that their price isn't just a reflection of the cost of the metal. Numismatic coins historically out perform the bullion market. There are several reasons for this, but it primarily comes down to supply and demand. With Numismatic coins, they are the highest quality coins available and have been graded by a grading service to authenticate their quality.
Coins are graded on a scale from 1 to 70, with 70 being perfect with no imperfections. Obviously, there are far less 70 graded coins and so when you purchase a numismatic coin with that grade, there are far less of them in existence and thus the price is reflected in the limited supply and that’s why they are coveted by collectors and have such a strong potential for greater increases in value over the years.
There are several other factors that go into the pricing and the value of such coins. Numismatic coins have 3 layers of cost built into their price:
The Metal Content When purchasing numismatic coins with the hope of appreciation in value it is safest to only deal in coins that are pure silver or gold. Many coins are a mix of different metals and aren't pure gold or silver. The amount of the metal contained in the coin is on determining factor of the pricing of that coin. It is highly recommended that if you are going to be collecting numismatic coins, that you look for the coins that have the highest metal content in them.
The Numismatic Premium This is the premium placed on the coin for its rarity, age and grade. The grade of the coin is the most significant factor when it comes to Numismatic premium. Coins are graded based on the condition they are in, whether they were circulated or not and if there are any imperfections in the coins.
Dealer profits This is premium the dealer must place on the coin to cover their overhead and create an income. Profits on numismatic coins can typically range from 15% to over 100%. It all depends on where you purchase your coins.
Of the three layers it is best to minimize #2 and completely eliminate #3. If you know how and where to buy at "Dealer Direct" cost, you can do that. This is exactly where Preservation Of Wealth saves you such a tremendous amount of money.
To establish the value of a numismatic coin, coins are graded by grading services. Top grading services are: PCGS, ICG and NGC.
Each service follows the standards of the Sheldon Scale of grading where each coin is rated based on specific characteristics for the given coin. A perfect MS70 grade can sometimes be subjective however when a coin is graded that receives this designation it can achieve a significant numismatic premium based on rarity and age.
Coins on this scale are graded from 1 to 70. 1 being barely recognizable as a coin and 70 being absolutely perfect with no imperfections.
The Sheldon Scale is a 70-point scale for grading coins, developed by Dr. William Sheldon in 1949. A slightly modified form of the Sheldon Scale has become the de facto standard for grading U.S. coins today, and is used by the major third party grading services when assigning a grade to a coin.
